Oh, the joy of those long planks with the turned up ends
Growing up the middle children in a family of nine kids, we were
always trying to keep up. We started skiing at the age of five and
competing at eight. Skiing brought us a great sense of joy and we
loved the freedom and the ability to express ourselves on the slopes.
Success came quickly as we were very competitive with one another
and pushed each other up the ladder to new and greater heights.
Being named to the US Ski Team at 15 and 16 years of age only fueled
the determination we had of reaching our goal to represent our country
at the 1976 Winter Olympic Games in lnnsbruck, Austria. As eighteen
year olds, we competed in our first Olympics in lnnsbruck and continued
to compete at the International level of skiing on the World Cup
Circuit. Although we're better known for our medal performances
at the Olympics, our ultimate goals were to win the Overall World
Cup title. This is considered by most racers as the greatest accomplishment
in the sport of alpine skiing. Phil was the first American to win
the Overall World Cup title, winning it three consecutive years
– 1981, 1982, and 1983.
